In regions where snow is common, snow holders are difficult to do without. The absence of such a device on the roof is fraught with irreversible consequences, especially when the snow melts in the sun and huge avalanches fall from a height. To protect yourself and your loved ones, you need to take care of snow cutters before the onset of cold weather, or even better - in advance, at the time of laying the roofing. About what kind of snow holders are, what the choice of design depends on and whether it is possible to make such a device on your own - all the details are below.
Snow holder on the roof: device features
The main element of roof safety in winter is a snow cutter, or snowstopper in common parlance. The structure is usually made of polymer coated steel. The main purpose of the device is to prevent an avalanche of snow from the roof. This is a guarantee of additional protection for objects located below, under the roof. But in some cases, the snow cutter also has another function: it traps the snow masses, which serve as thermal insulation.
A snow holder is a special system that is installed on the roof and is designed to hold snow and prevent it from slipping. According to experts, galvanized steel - at least 1 mm thick and brackets - at least 2 mm thick, should be used for the manufacture of snow cutters. It is important that the structure is treated with a special powder paint that is resistant to adverse environmental conditions and has a quality certificate.
Tubular snow holder "in operation"
Before choosing a snowproof device, you need to get acquainted with its structure and basic concepts. A tubular or lattice snow guard consists of 2 brackets (each has 4 brackets and a set of fastening to them), 2 pipes or a lattice of a given configuration. The responsible manufacturer adds rubber seals to the kit. An angle snow cutter is a profiled sheet of a certain length bent at an angle of 45 °. The set for it or the clasps also comes with a set of fasteners according to the number of structures.
A schematic snow saw with a set of bindings looks like this
High-quality installation and high reliability of the use of snow holders involves the installation of snow cutters to the crate.
Sheathing - wood or metal flooring, constructed from slats of different cross-sections and installed perpendicular to the rafter legs (roof supporting system).
Sheathing and rafters - the basis of the roof
The snow cutter will provide reliable protection against unexpected snow melt when:
- the structure is made according to generally accepted standards (GOST) from high-strength materials - such devices are usually tested before they enter the building materials market;
- the installation of the snow guard was carried out by an experienced specialist, based on the principles of installing such structures;
- the snow retention complex corresponds to the type of roof and is selected according to the expected load - it is important to take into account the strength of the material and the tightness of the connection of the device.
Naturally, each consumer is guided by the availability of snow-retaining structures in the building materials market and by their price category. The price of each type of snow holders depends primarily on the configuration and brand. Imported snow cutters are considered the most reliable and are much more expensive than domestic ones. This is due to the fact that a serious attitude towards snow-proof devices in our country is only gaining momentum, and the production of such structures has not yet been fully established. In Europe, the installation of snow barriers on the roof came in the middle of the last century.
It makes sense to use snow holders in all cases when snow may come off the roof and there is a risk of damage to the roof covering, drainage system, buildings, plantings, etc. It is pointless to install in 3 cases: no snow, small slope length, tilt angle more than 60 ° ...

How to choose the "right" snow protection device for your roof
It should be remembered: it is customary to mount such snow limiters on a metal roof - it is metal tiles, decking, seam roofs that quickly warm up in the cold season, which contributes to an avalanche-like snow cover from the roof. What you should pay attention to when buying and installing snow-resistant complexes:
- it is important to know the type of roofing material - the method of fastening, the configuration and shape of the bracket or fasteners will depend on this, and a snow holder is selected according to the type of roof;
- be sure to take into account the angle of inclination of the slope - this affects the type of device;
- a significant indicator is the amount of precipitation in the region, which is expected during the cold season;
- determine the orientation of buildings and structures to the cardinal points - it is most likely that snow will melt from the southern and southeastern sides - here you cannot do without snow plows;
- the last is the aesthetic appearance of the snow guard - this roof component will always be in sight at any time of the year.
But they also do not forget to take into account the massiveness of buildings, parking lots, paths and how crowded the place where snow falls from the roof can be.
A snow cutter on the roof of public buildings is a must
If the snow cutter is in the color of the roof and is stylized to the general design of the estate and the building as a whole, and most importantly - to reliably protect it from a sudden snowfall - we can assume that the snow-protection device is absolutely functional.
Types of snow cutters
Most modern snow retention systems have a design that allows snow masses to pass through themselves - these are conditional barriers, when the snow melts evenly and its density changes, the snow drifts seep through the device. At the same time, the snow cover becomes less dangerous for objects and people under the roof, but does not guarantee absolute safety. These snowmobiles include:
- drag bars.
Video: snow holders - varieties and types of structures
The first 2 types are considered the most snowproof - tubular and lattice - they are recommended to be used in areas where snowfall is a common occurrence. Lamellar corner and drag (point) - a variant for regions with a mild climate, where there is little precipitation in winter, and snow deposits on the roof are rare.
And also there are snow slats. The design feature of such snow-resistant structures is that they absolutely do not allow the snow mass to pass through - an ideal option as a snow retainer for thermal insulation. They are mounted on the roof with an inclination angle of less than 50 °.
Snow cutter bar is often used in regions with low rainfall in the winter - mainly for safety net
But there is also a significant drawback - such snow cutters are limited by their own height, so such a device does not help to contain a large amount of snow. Snow cutters are recommended for cement-sand roofs (shingles).
Snow cutter-bar is recommended by specialists for roofs that do not contribute to the accumulation of snow
The verdict of experienced experts: materials such as slate, bituminous coating, ondulin have a high coefficient of friction, therefore, any snow retainers are very rarely installed on roofs with such a coating - snow never falls off spontaneously and in a huge mass from such a roof. At the same time, the objective opinion of ordinary people says something else: when winter begins with freezing rains and low temperatures, in the long term, one should expect that snow will accumulate on a soft roof and, accordingly, melt slowly with the threat of a collapse.
If the angle of inclination of the slope does not exceed 15 °, then snow holders are not needed, the snow melts slowly even without them, there are no avalanche descents.
Varieties of cross-cut: lattice, tubular, corner
Depending on the type of snow-retaining structure, it is necessary to observe the installation technology, which is indicated in the instructions, but, regardless of this, there are two basic rules during the installation process: • the supports must be attached to the crate (lattice flooring for attaching the roofing material to the roof); if this is not possible, a wooden board laid under the roofing can serve as a support.
Universal tubular snow guards
Tubular snow retention devices are considered the most effective by experienced roofing masters. The essence of the tubular snow cutter is that corners of galvanized metal are installed on the roof using fasteners, holes for 2-3 pipes are made in the vertical shelf of each, and holes for fasteners are made in the horizontal level of the corner.
The total height of the structure is about 15–20 cm, while the distance from the bottom tube to the deck should not exceed 3–4 cm. The bracket looks like a vertical plate with holes for pipes. At the bottom of the bracket there is a horizontal shelf for attaching to the roof slope. Screws for metal 8x60 mm with a hex head are screwed into it. Sometimes the type of bracket may differ depending on what type of roofing material the snow guard will be used for.
Tubular snow cutter - schematic design
The tubular snow retainer must pass evenly along the entire perimeter of the roof, level with the load-bearing wall, preferably strictly along the same line - the essence of the device is that the snow, with gradual melting in small portions, passes through horizontally located tubes. With this arrangement, the load from snow and ice will fall above the eaves overhang - this is the safest option.
The price category for tubular snow cutters is from 1000 to 3500 rubles, depending on the design features and the manufacturer.
It looks like a tubular snow holder
Features of tubular snow holders
If the terrain is characterized by a large amount of snow in winter, and the height of the slope is more than 5 m, then this device is recommended to be installed in 2 rows at a distance of 1–1.5 m from each other. Besides:
- tubular snow cutters are applicable on roofs with a slope of no more than 60 °, otherwise the structure will not cope with the load created by the snow layer;
- it is forbidden to mount a device of this type on a cornice - this is fraught with damage to the roof overhang or gutters, the distance to the cornice overhang when attaching tubular snow cutters should be at least 50 cm;
- tubular snow holders are considered universal, as they are suitable for any roofing material and are quite suitable for installation on a roof that has been in use for a long time.
Galvanized tubular snow cutters are considered the most durable, as they are not subject to corrosion. And lattice and lamellar under the pressure of the snow mass can bend or even break out of the mountings.
Video: tubular snow holder and its installation
Lattice snow cutters
In second place in terms of their effectiveness, lattice snow cutters are considered as a snow-holding device. It is important that the height of the structure cannot be higher than 20 cm - accordingly, a layer of snow no more than 20–40 cm high will hold such a barrier, as in the case of tubular snow cutters. Lattice snow holders are galvanized rectangular gratings arranged vertically with a mesh diameter of no more than 5–7 cm. Attaches each element to the same brackets as tubular snow cutters.
The simplest design of a lattice snow cutter
Install lattice snow guards on the roof in one row. It can be discontinuous if the snow load is light. The gap between the devices is not more than 30 cm. As for the angle of inclination of the roof and the type of roofing, there are no restrictions here.
Distinctive features of lattice snow cutters from tubular ones:
- the price of the former is 30–40% more expensive;
- when installing lattice snow-resistant devices, the snow cover is as reliably retained as when using tubular structures, but the snow melts and flows down more slowly - the tubes have a large throughput;
- lattice snow cutters can be used on a roof with an angle of inclination of more than 45-50 °.
The price of lattice snow cutters also depends on the configuration and manufacturer - 1800-4000 rubles.
Lattice snow cutters: large and small mesh
Plate or corner snow holders
This type of snow retention device is considered the least reliable - the corner snow saw has little resistance. In essence, this is a snowstopper, it is a structure bent at an angle based on a professional metal. The blade snow cutter is capable of holding small layers of snow.
Schematic design of a corner snow cutter
Specificity of blade snow cutters:
- it is recommended to install them on corrugated board;
- the angle of inclination of the slope should not exceed 30 °;
- these snowmobiles can be mounted randomly, in one row or in a checkerboard pattern;
- with a roof height above 3–3.5 meters, the use of such a snow retention system is ineffective.
Corner (lamellar) snow holder on the roof of the house
Such devices are mounted along the eaves with breaks within 2-3 waves of the roofing material. Usually they are installed in at least two rows, the distance between which is 1–1.5 m. Fastening is carried out in the upper wave of corrugated board or metal tile.
The price corresponds to the functionality: lamellar snow cutters will cost 300-800 rubles.
Video: corner snow cutter and its installation
Spot snow cutters, or tows, are designed mainly for soft roofs. They are not perceived as a serious and reliable protection against snowfall, basically this type of snow-resistant structures is acceptable as an addition to tubular or lattice structures. Pull-bar snow cutters are also called snow breakers - that is, this device helps to "crush" a small amount of snow. The process takes place together under the influence of natural weather conditions and sunlight. The principle of operation of the tows does not allow them to be used as a snow barrier with a powerful load.
Snow hooks (point) snow cutters and snow hooks are often mounted on outbuildings
Options for using yokes:
- on a roof, the angle of inclination of which does not exceed 30 °;
- as an addition to other more highly efficient snow retention structures;
- in regions with warm and little snowy winters.
There is another option for drag snow cutters - hooks-stoppers made of metal (they are thinner) or plastic (thicker, but withstand less load compared to metal). And also, according to experts, they are the most unreliable devices for snow retention, especially in areas where there is a lot of snow. But there are such structures on the construction market and they cannot be silent about.

The yoke is the cheapest version of the snow-retaining structure: 1 yoke costs from 40 to 100 rubles.
Snow cutter formula: how to determine the load of snow load on the snow retention system
It turns out that it is not entirely easy to carry out accurate calculations that will allow you to determine the number of snow cutters on a given roof without a miss. Professionals use the formula accepted in Europe.
Formula for calculating snow load to determine the number of snow cutters
Then, guided by the technical parameters of the manufacturer of snow-resistant devices, the type and required number of structures are determined. In this case, several indicators are taken for the calculation:
- the length of the slope in a horizontal projection;
- drag coefficient;
- snow pressure per meter2taken on a given territory.
But this technique is most likely suitable for large-scale calculations. Specialists in the sales department will offer to choose a structure taking into account the type of roof, then they will calculate the number of snow cutters according to the size of the roof (length, width, height). Experienced roofers usually rely on SNiP 2.01.07–85 “Loads and Impacts”. The average owner of a private home installs snow guards on the roof around the perimeter of the house. In the case when the roof slope is more than 3 m - snow-protection devices are fixed in rows with an interval of 1-1.5 m - if these are tubular or lattice snow cutters, 0.5 m in a checkerboard pattern or in one row - for plate and point snow holders.
The algorithm for calculating the number of snow holders is as follows:
- Determine the length of the roof overhang (parallel to the ground level) and the angle of its inclination (using a protractor) - this allows you to find out the number of snow cutters in one row.
- Calculate the length of the slope (DS) - according to the calculation, it will be seen how many rows with snow guards are required. DS = n snow cutters.
- They are guided to which snow area the terrain belongs to.
- Further, according to the table, the estimated number of snow holders and brackets is determined.
- Summarize the results for all roof slopes.
Calculation of the snow load and the length of the roof slope, according to which the number of snow cutters is determined
Features of installing snow guards on different types and structures of the roof
Depending on the type of roof, the brackets and the fastening system of the snow retainers are usually very different from each other - each snow retaining element must correspond to the specified technical parameters. Naturally, the operational characteristics of various fastening devices and types of snow cutters are difficult for the layman to know. The best option when choosing a snow guard according to the type of roof is to consult a specialist or a sales assistant in a building materials store.
Metal roofing and corrugated board
Any kind of snow guards can be installed on a smooth metal surface. The choice depends on the preferences of the owner of the house and his financial capacity. The longer the roof slope, the more rows of snow-retaining structures there should be. If the slope is not more than 5 m and the slope angle is small, it is allowed to mount one row of structures, and if the slope is more than 5 m, the snow retention elements should go in several rows with a step of 2-3 m so that the snow load is evenly distributed over the roof.
Video: installation of a snow cutter (tubular) on a metal tile
For this type of coating, special clamping devices are used. The principle of mounting snow guards on a seam roof is that the brackets have a certain shape and are attached directly to the seam - this does not violate the tightness.
On the folds, as a rule, lattice and tubular snow cutters are installed - the fasteners provide for a smaller number of holes in the roof.
Video: snow cutters on a seam roof
I noticed that on neighboring houses, snow cutters are only above the dormer windows. On the other hand, where the roof is flat and runs almost parallel to the ground surface, there are no installations on the roof. Perhaps this is a kind of economy, the expediency of attaching a snow installation above the dormer windows or a balcony, an exhaust hood, above the porch is quite obvious. But on the flat-sided side in snowy winters, so much snow can accumulate that a snow cutter will simply be a salvation. So, neighbors on the other side had no snow retention system at all on the flat side of the roof. But in a hurricane (and this happens) a huge snowball fell right on the fence made of professional sheet and, naturally, crumpled it like a piece of paper, it's good that this backyard is impassable. The conclusion is simple: snow cutters are a design worthy of respect, provided that they are made of high-quality materials, selected according to the type of roof and the installation is carried out by a professional hand.
Homemade snow cutter: design advantages and disadvantages
It will not be difficult to make a snowproof structure on your own if the owner of the house has experience in construction, and even better - in roofing work. It is necessary to calculate the length of the slope and, according to the above scheme, determine the number of snow cutters. The best option for making a structure is galvanizing. But some use timber, others use a metal corner or PVC pipes. And also calculate the number of fasteners and brackets. The advantage of such a snow barrier can be considered material savings, the disadvantage is the lack of a guarantee of the reliability and safe operation of the snowproof installation. We must not forget that any errors in calculating the snow load and unprofessional installation can be deplorable.

Important points: how to avoid mistakes when choosing and installing snow holders
Everyone evaluates his financial capabilities himself, comparing personal experience and professionalism, but sometimes you have to correct inaccuracies in calculations or poor-quality work of a roofer. Most often, errors "pop up" during the operation of snowmobiles.
Mistake number 1: the tightness of the roof is broken
In this case, 2 options are possible: you can foresee this problem in advance or solve it as soon as it appears. In the first case, rubber gaskets are put on the self-tapping screws from below during installation - this allows you to achieve tightness. Alternatively, excessive pressure on the bracket and fasteners while installing the snow cutter can damage the roof. If, nevertheless, a leakage has occurred, experts recommend using a building sealant (Herment, Moment).
Mistake number 2: inconsistency of the structure with the type of roof and climatic zone
It is illogical to attach structures for a soft roof to the metal covering - there will be no sense from this. In the case when in regions with snowy winters ineffective devices for snow retention are used, designed for a low amount of precipitation in winter, it is impossible to reduce the damage from the descent of snow masses from the roof. It is necessary to accurately carry out all calculations and correctly determine the snow region.
Mistake # 3: installation errors
Often, the fasteners are mounted directly to the roof during the installation of the snow cutter. In this case, experts recommend making a hook on the crate (an additional basis for fastenings - a timber) - then even in the snowiest winter the structure will be reliable and the bracket together with fasteners will not break out "by the root". Professionalism is required here - without this, the success of the event is close to zero.
The optimal place for installing snow guards is considered to be the edge of the roof at a distance of 0.5 m from the eaves. They CANNOT be mounted above the eaves overhang, unless the overhang is not formed by the rafters. And in the process of installing the crate, under the crest of the wave of the metal tile, where the places for attaching the snow holder are planned, it is necessary to put bars - this is more reliable.
Video: the main mistakes when installing snow guards and options for fixing them
There are several types of snow holders: depending on the material of manufacture, configuration and features of attachment to various roofs. But the purpose of any snow cutter - regardless of price, appearance and installation complexity - is to prevent snow avalanches. This is what every owner is guided by when choosing a snowproof device for his home. Their choice in the modern construction market will satisfy the needs of any wallet. At the same time, in the assortment, you can find snow protection complexes for each roof, regardless of the structure and size of the roofing.
Snow holders on the roof in Leroy Merlin
Leroy Merlin offers a range of snow guards that can be matched to any type of roof. The main price segment of such elements is 550-850 rubles per product.
Snow protectors for metal tiles
As a snow retainer in Leroy Merlin, you can purchase a special universal tubular element, the cost of which is 870 rubles per product. Available in the store in brown and green. Manufactured in Russia. Galvanized steel is used as the main material in the manufacture. The weight of one element is almost 5 kg.
Also, for such roofs, a snow retention strip, which has an additional polyester coating, is suitable. The cost of such a product is 546 rubles.
It is usually installed on pitched roof surfaces and goes well not only with metal roofs, but also with other types of roofing surfaces. Additional coating makes the surface resistant not only to scratches and light mechanical damage, but also to low temperatures and frequent temperature changes, exposure to ultraviolet radiation. Material - galvanized steel.
Snow protectors for soft roofs
Most often, flexible shingles act as a soft roof.
For such a surface in the hypermarket, you can choose holders at a price of 546 to 870 rubles per item.
You are given the opportunity to choose from the following options:
- The tubular snow holder is universal. Length - 3 m. Cost - 870 rubles / item. The weight of one element is 4.9 kg. Available in brown, green and red colors. Such slats help to prevent early and sudden descent of the snow mass from the roof. It can also be used additionally as a protection for gutters. It is actively used in regions that are characterized by heavy snowfalls. Special self-tapping screws with seals are used as fasteners.
- Slat for keeping snow on the roof with additional polyester cover. The length of the product is 2 meters. Plank weight - 1.8 m. Produced in Russia. The product is offered in Leroy Merlin in red, brown and green. The cost of the product is 546 rubles. It is used not only for fixing snow, but also for its even convergence.
Snow holders for ondulin
For such a surface in Leroy Merlin, it is possible to purchase the following types of snow holders:
- Tubular universal snow holder 3 m long. The cost of one element is 870 rubles.
- Planks that act as snow retention. Additionally coated with a layer of substance using polyester. In Leroy Merlin, slats are offered with a length of 200 cm. The cost is 546 rubles.
Snow holders for standing seam roofs
For a seam roof, the types of snow retainers will be similar to those used for an ondulin roof - universal tubular elements and special strips with an additional polyester coating.
Types of snow guards
It is imperative to install a snow guard. He will be able to save you from accidents and litigation in case of damage to someone else's property during an avalanche. Which one to choose? What types of snow guards are available?
The most common option is lattice structures. They are made of metal and can be installed on almost any kind of roof. The gratings are quite effective and it is they who, as a rule, are used to protect against the descent of snow masses in multi-storey buildings. Such structures can be mounted both by hammering and hinged.
Lamellar type of snow holders can be installed on metal tiles and profiled sheets.
Such structures do not work well if the angle of inclination of the roof is more than 30 °.
The lamellar structures are made from the same material as the roof and are relatively inexpensive.
Installation of a lamellar snow guard
On a roof made of soft material, snow stops can be mounted. They have a hook design. Very often, such snow guards are installed as additional protection. Thanks to the use of modern technology, the snow stops are made of transparent material, which makes them less visible.
Another universal (not depending on the type of roof) snow retainer is tubular. It is a bracket with attached tubes. This design retains snow no worse than trellis.
Among the variety of designs of snow retainers, the most common are lattice and tubular. They are quite effective and are great for all types of roofing. It is about the installation of such products with our own hands that we will talk about.
We count expenses
If you decide to install snow guards on the roof of your house, you have three options for resolving the issue. The first is to entrust the installation of snow holders to a construction company. Tubular and lattice structures are sold ready-made. Installation is paid separately, its price is calculated by running meters or by the piece.
Table: average price for construction and custom installation of snow guards
|Snow guard type||The cost of construction with accessories||Installation price|
|Tubular||From 1150 rub / m||400 rub / m|
|Lattice||From 2300 rub. for 1.5 m||RUB 350 / m|
|Corner||From 370 rubles / m (bar)||RUB 250 / pcs.|
|Drag lifts||From 56 rubles / piece||40 rub / piece|
By calculating the total length or number of snow guards, you will get the cost of roof equipment. The second option allows you to save on the installation of structures.
Ready-made kits include detailed installation instructions, so it's easy to assemble them yourself. The set includes the snow holder itself (pipes or grate sheet), fasteners, supports and brackets.
You can almost halve the cost of the snow holders themselves, if you do not buy a finished product, but make it yourself. For example, 1 sq. m of stainless steel 0.5 mm and fasteners will cost you about 600-700 rubles. From it you can make several slats for a corner snowstop (the number depends on the height of the slat).

How to properly install snow guards on roofs of different types
After finishing the roof, the owners ask themselves the question of safety. therefore, options are being considered for installing barriers to trap snow during the thaw. In fact, this question is quite difficult, because you have to choose a high-quality product, and after buying it you still have to be able to install it.
Some brackets are attached between the waves of the metal tile. It all depends on where the crate passes
Installation of snow guards on a metal roof
Snow retention on a roof made of metal tiles is carried out using suitable structures. On this type of coating, they try to mount corner, lattice, tubular. They are installed in stages:
- We apply the markings where the catchers will be located.
- We assemble the safety fence on site.
- We make holes for fasteners in the lower shelf of the material.
- We install rubber gaskets to avoid vibration and deformation.
- We fix the brackets on the roof slopes using screws with parameters 0.8 × 6 mm.
- We insert in turn the pipes and fix them with removable plastic pads.
The bolts must be tightened evenly. It is important that there are no skewed edges on either side of the barrier. Corner and lattice models are installed on the roof in a similar way.
They try to mount snow holders for corrugated board on a rather massive mount to the high point of the slope
Installation of snow guards on a roof made of corrugated board
Decking is considered a fairly popular material for roofing. However, it must be operated with caution, since with accidental mechanical stress there is a risk of serious damage to the web. In order to accurately perform the installation of snow guards on a roof made of corrugated board, you should follow the instructions.
- We prepare the surface, carry out the markup.
- We put rubber gaskets with holes at the designated places for the bolts.
- We install the bracket and fix it with bolts.
- We attach the device to the upper wave so that the lower tube can be installed.
- We insert the strips into the holes of the brackets so that they do not fall out, we install the plugs to the ends.
Installation of snow guards for the entire length of the slope is carried out only if the roof has a steep slope
The thickness of the rubber washers, which serve as a lining under the bracket, should not be less than 8 mm
Please note that if the roof has a metal crate, then the process of installing barriers will be somewhat complicated, in contrast to attaching snow guards to metal tiles. All the features of this process can be seen in the video.
Installation of barriers on folded roofs
It is better to purchase a snow barrier for a fold on purpose. It comes with special fasteners, washers and all the necessary parts. It is more difficult to fix snow holders on this type of surface than on metal tiles. Let's look at an example of how to do it correctly.
|Illustration||Description of action|
|We fasten the bracket to a double standing seam, after placing washers under the fasteners|
|We connect the nut and bolt to each other using a special hex key|
|Please note that the bracket brackets are installed at a height of 3 mm from the rebate surface|
|It is also possible to mount the bracket directly on a surface with no clearance. However, in this case, you need to ensure that the installation is perpendicular|
To ensure safety on such a roof, exclusively tubular or lattice snow protectors are installed.
Installation of snow guards on a soft roof
It is known that soft roofing is considered quite expensive and requires careful treatment of itself. Therefore, the installation of the retaining elements must be careful. For this roof option, they try to use triangular bows. Installation is carried out according to the following algorithm.
- We place the barriers with a step of 0.5-0.7 m along the slope. Moreover, they are staggered.
- We attach the device to the crate so that the next sheet of material overlaps the bracket plate.
- Be sure to install weather-resistant rubber gaskets before fixing.
In this section, we figured out how to install snow guards on a roof made of corrugated board, soft material and metal tiles.
If the roof slope is slight, then one row of snow catchers is sufficient.
How are different types of roof snow guards installed?
Tubular and lattice structures are considered universal. Snow retention on a roof made of metal, profiled sheet, roll materials is equally possible on absolutely all types of roofs. The structures are reliable, they can be installed on roofs with a large angle of inclination.
Lattice and tubular
Such snow barriers are capable of withstanding a significant weight of snow masses. A big plus is the ability to install these structures both on a new roof, during construction, and on an existing one. The specificity of the fastening implies the installation of brackets through the outer covering to the roof lathing - by the method of nailing.
The length of the brackets varies from 30 cm to one and a half meters, if extension is necessary, then the pipes are joined. Lattice counterparts are lengthened by adding sections of the required length. This type of snow barriers is mounted either in one row or staggered.
Corner and lamellar snow holders on the roof photo
These roof snow guards are ideal for mounting on rigid types of roofing. It can be metal, corrugated board, galvanized. Fastening of the structure is carried out both during the installation of a new roof, and on an operating one.
Plate snow holders
Snow retention on a roof made of corrugated board is carried out by attaching it to the upper wave of the roofing sheet. Therefore, such structures are designed for light snow loads and are recommended for installation in regions with a temperate climate.
This type of snow holders is a kind of plate analogs, their installation is carried out using special roof bolts with a rubber gasket. In most cases, the structure is sold already equipped with all the necessary parts, gaskets and self-tapping screws.
Corner snow holders
It is worth noting that corner and plate snow holders are not very durable and cannot hold a large weight of snow masses. If the angle of inclination of the roof (slope) is less than 30 degrees, then you should not install them.
Log snow barriers
Log snow barriers are the oldest way to keep snow masses on the roof. It is rarely used today, but it is still relevant for lovers of characteristic design and architectural style reminiscent of Bavarian and Alpine buildings.
This type of snow guards is distinguished by its reliability and high efficiency, since a powerful pipe (or log) is capable of holding very heavy loads. Today, it is rare to find a wooden beam that acts as a barrier; metal pipes with a diameter of about 140 mm are most often used. Supports for log holders are made of steel sheets and have an uncomplicated fastening system.
As for the snow-retaining yokes (snow stoppers), they are not particularly reliable and often act as auxiliary elements. They interact with any snow-retaining structures and are installed at a distance of at least 80 cm from the edge of the roof.
When installing snow guards on the roof with your own hands, you should observe extreme caution and safety rules, and place them evenly over the entire area of the roof slope. Clamps provide a kind of point retention of snow masses, are made by stamping and are suitable exclusively for metal and corrugated roofing.
In order to properly install the snow guard, it is necessary to strictly observe the installation technology and listen to the advice of experienced craftsmen.
The main condition for correct installation is compliance with the requirement for the location of the snow cutter exactly along the line of the load-bearing wall, and in no case below. This is usually 50 to 80 cm from the edge of the eaves.
Such a need is due to the serious weight load that the roof structure experiences, holding massive blocks of snow. AND it is very important that it is transferred to the capital structures of the building, and not only to the roof. Tubular snow cutters must be installed in one line, installation at random, many experts do not recommend. This avoids uneven weight load on the roof and prevents damage to the roof. Below is an algorithm for installing a snow guard on a pitched roof made of solid roofing material.
First of all, they expect segment between adjacent brackets, taking into account the snow load and the length of the roof slope. So, if the length of the roof exceeds 5 m 40 cm, then the step should be 90 cm, and on shorter slopes - from 60 to 80 cm. should be fixed around the entire perimeter of the roofwithout interrupting the integrity of the structure. On large and steep roofs, you can place 2-3 rows of snow cutters, leaving a distance of at least 2 meters between them. And also it should be remembered that pipes from the last bracket in a row should not protrude more than 30 cm from it.
Attaching the brackets
On roofs made of metal, corrugated board and ondulin the brackets must be mounted on the lathing, expanded at the attachment points due to the bars. Installation is carried out through the through method through the roofing material using self-tapping screws of the "wood-metal" type with sealed rubber gaskets.
Installation of pipes
Any work on the roof should be performed only during daylight hours and only in dry weather. Particular attention should be paid to shoes: they should be flat and not slip on the roofing material.
