Practical tips for growing leeks

Practical tips for growing leeks

I grew up gorgeous leek... One problem is not to preserve the harvest. When my parents were digging the cellars, it exploded in Chernobyl, so they buried themselves so deep that all my friends ceased to be afraid of the end of the world, they say, there will be somewhere to sit out. Our bunkers will withstand a direct hit from a nuclear warhead, but it is impossible to store vegetables there - it's too warm even in twenty-degree frosts.

For example, a cabbage suspended from the ceiling immediately begins to grow and in a couple of months turns into a "mammoth tusk" covered with pitiful white scales. And the leeks just start to rot there. Therefore, with a generous hand, I give it away to neighbors, friends, acquaintances.

Imagine my surprise when about a third of the city's natives were sincerely interested, "and at what end they eat this thing," and two-thirds, although they know what it is, but don't even imagine how onion - quickly apply in cooking. And you, dear readers, do you often eat leeks? And what about beans, lentils, turnips, anise, lovage, nettles, cow parsnip, quinoa and other earthly fruits that are irreplaceable in the lean diet of our healthy ancestors? That's the same!

I have no desire to go into botany: having looked through the "Flora Price" magazine in the "bows" section for the last 2-3 years, I noticed that there are many articles devoted to onions of different types and varieties, therefore, not wanting to take away bread from specialists, I will share my profane, but practical experience.

In my youth, when my parents just bought a dacha, I planted and sowed almost everything. Obviously, then the leek did not make an impression on me, and I gave up this occupation and bought it in the supermarket until one autumn in the market in Kingisepp I saw a "leek" as thick as my arm and my height! We talked with the girl who sold it. In addition to the fact that, without a doubt, she has, as the Americans say, "green hands", she also turned out to be the owner of a company selling seeds. As a result, I got my hands on six different varieties of leeks and recommendations for growing them. Nowadays onion seeds can be found in almost every seed store.

I was a diligent student, so all six varieties (2 American, 2 European, 1 selection of our VIR and 1 joint production) gave an excellent harvest! As they say, find 10 differences. I did not find one, just twin brothers, the reference version! Therefore, I will not recommend anything, which variety you buy, and plant this.

In short, sowing leeks should be at the end of February, and in order not to forget about the timing, I have determined for myself the last day of this month. If you want, you can check the lunar calendar, it won't be superfluous. I sow seeds in Belarusian peat pots the size of a thimble. I don't know how about the rest, but peat products in this new state are produced excellently, of various shapes, sizes, and most importantly, cheaply. By the time the seedlings have to dive, they are sold in all supermarkets in St. Petersburg. Ours are also not baked, they learned how to do the soil well.

Peat soil with white polymer inclusions is ideal for germinating seeds, I won't name the company, I don't remember, and who would allow me to do hidden advertising.

I fill each pot with soil, water it abundantly, throw in 2 seeds each, sprinkle it a little, cover it with a film and put it on the central heating battery. Three days later, I determine a place for the pots somewhere in the backyard of the loggia. And there I have - the gardens of Eden. And now, in the shade of balsams, under a fig (literally) leaf sprout pitiful leek hairs. The main thing is not to let the soil dry out.

In the meantime, the day remains. I move some of the plants to the village, making room for other seedlings. Now I take peat pots of a larger caliber and load the "thimbles" into them, mixing the purchased soil with three-year-old manure. I repeat this procedure 2-3 times in the spring. Moreover, each time the smaller pot is placed on the bottom of the larger one, and the onion itself is covered with earth. If both seeds have sprouted, I do not touch them until planting. Provided the ground is loose, it is easy to separate them.

In May I bring out the seedlings to the greenhouse, usually we plant the leeks according to the residual principle, i.e. when all other landings are complete. Of course, he loves loose earth, but where to get it? I plant it in sticky cold clay, which over 20 years of land use we have slightly diluted with compost and everything that I rake out of chickens over the winter. And nothing grows! Only it is necessary to plant in the furrow, like potatoes, only a little more often, and more often to huddle. The more you huddle, the longer the false stem will be, i.e. the same "white leg" that is tasty, juicy and healthy.

And what is so useful for leeks?

I answer. There are a lot of useful substances: salts of iron, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and there are also essential oils, carotene, ascorbic acid, which is slightly less than in currants, and other vitamins. But the main advantage of leek is sulfur.

Do you know why cats eat mice with skin? Yes, so that they themselves have a good skin, tk. there is a lot of sulfur in mouse wool. And advertising imposes on us, they say, buy shampoo, and the hair will be soft and silky. My grandmother used to say: "You shouldn't wash the mangy dog, but you need to feed it." How many people are caught on advertising snag! No, my dears, in order to have good hair in our northern conditions, as well as skin, nails, teeth, cartilage and generally a strong skeleton, you need to get enough sulfur, phosphorus, calcium and vitamins. Do not expect that you can go to the pharmacy for all this. Our body does not want synthetics, just plant the liver, it wants the substances it needs to be synthesized by food intestinal bacteria, and they love green stuff, which is successfully replaced by leeks in winter.

Our main problem is not even bad digestion, but in the elimination of digestive products, with which most of them, due to a sedentary lifestyle, have some difficulties. So we poison ourselves with decay products in our own intestines. Do not believe me, but try to starve, for example, during Great Lent. And on the fortieth day you will be drawn to visit the "toilet fairy", and, I assure you, you will not do without "gifts".

You can't even imagine how many kilograms of ballast a person accumulates in a lifetime! Nature has determined for us to chew coarse fibers, fiber, bran, so that there is no stagnation in the intestines, and we prefer soft baked goods and "snake" fast food. The fibrous structure of leeks is vital to the modern lazy city dweller. In addition, leeks are successfully used in folk medicine in the treatment of rheumatism, gout and urolithiasis. The very rheumatic, believe me, I know what I am writing about.

So how do you eat leeks? And just like onions, i.e. added to the first and second courses, they can be sprinkled with herring and potatoes, even boiled, even fried, it, cut into rings, can be served as an independent side dish for meat and fish or as an addition to any vegetable side dish. Leek is indispensable for decorating dishes before serving on the festive table. But it's best to use it fresh in a variety of salads. As an example, I would like to bring to your attention a salad that I make during the Christmas Lent. My family called it “Christmas Eve”.

Among the wide variety of vegetables, a significant place is occupied by to ... There are more than a hundred varieties of it.

Leek (Allium porrum L.) is a spicy vegetable. It is grown as a garden crop throughout the country, except for the Far North.

The homeland of leeks is Mesopotamia and Egypt.

Historical records state that the pyramid builders ate onions, garlic, and leeks every day. It was found in the graves of the ancient Egyptians, in particular in the tomb of Pharaoh Ramses. On many grave frescoes, leeks figured among the plant products that were offered to the God of the underground life Amenti. Pharaoh of Egypt Cheops, wishing to reward those close to him, appointed them in the form of a pension a gift consisting of 1000 grains of peas, 100 mugs of beer, one bull and 100 bunches of leeks.

Leek was used by Jews during the crossing of the Sinai Desert. In ancient times, leeks were ranked third in terms of useful qualities after onions and garlic.

Emperor Nero was very fond of leeks, for which he was nicknamed the leek eater - "porrophagous". He sometimes ate exclusively on this vegetable. According to the ancient Roman physician Glinius, Nero on certain days of each month, with all foodstuffs, took more leek to improve his voice. In general, leek was popular in ancient Rome.

He perfectly supports strength, very satisfying, as the people say "greedy". This feature made it possible for the leek to conquer Europe. In the Middle Ages, he was a favorite vegetable of the poor, especially he helped out in hungry years. The leek is called the flower of Wales, its national symbol. Onions have been used here since time immemorial; magical properties were attributed to it. It was believed that if a warrior has a leek with him, he will not be wounded and will come out of the battle victorious. On St David's Day, March 1, Welsh people decorate their clothes and homes with leeks. It was Saint David who taught the Welsh this belief. In 1415, at the Battle of Agincourt, Welsh archers, adorned with leeks, together with the English army defeated the superior forces of the French. During the time of Queen Victoria

the Welsh Life Guards Regiment received a distinctive sign in the form of a drawing of a leek. In the 80s of the last century in Great Britain

minted coins in denominations of 1 pound sterling depicting the symbols of England (rose), Scotland (thistle) and Wales (leek).

Leeks in literature

It is very popular in modern France - even the name, or rather the surname of the famous detective Hercule Poirot - the hero of Agatha Christie - means a bow (Poirot).

The famous Cipollino by Gianni Rodari is a leek.

Alice in Wonderland receives a leek recipe: “Green leeks! Yes, chop it, my friend! And the butter of the fields! "

Leeks are called a biennial plant, but in reality, under certain conditions, it is able to form lateral short shoots of renewal at the base of the false stem, therefore it still belongs to a perennial culture. The main reproduction is by seeds. The growing season of the cultivated varieties is approximately 180 days. The more productive varieties are late-ripening, with a long stem.

In the first year, the leek grows and develops very slowly, a good harvest is obtained in the second year. When grown from seedlings in the first year, a rather powerful false bulb is formed, which consists of thickened bases of the leaves, it is called a "leg". The thickened bases of the leaves turn into a false stem. The height of the false stem, as well as the number of leaves, are traits and varieties.

In the second year of cultivation, a straight arrow grows, about 150 cm high, with an inflorescence in the form of a lilac umbrella, in which the seeds ripen. Leeks are a long day plant. Its large stalk develops under high light intensity, when the day is longer than the night. With a short day, the plant quickly goes into the arrow. Cold-resistant, adult plants tolerate autumn frosts up to minus 7 degrees Celsius without damage, but the seedlings may die.

Even 50 years ago, he was practically unknown in Russia. And now it is second in popularity only to garlic and onions.

Russia has two of its own varieties of leeks - Sizokryl (aka Bulgarian) and Karantansky. The rest of the leek varieties are different hybrids from Holland and France.

Our varieties are zoned and naturally bred - no genetic modification

Today you can buy the following varieties of leeks both in the shops of Karasuk and on the websites of agricultural firms:

1. Karantansky - agrofirm Aelita

3. Autumn giant - SeDeK agrofirm

4. Elephant - SeDeK agrofirm

5. Alligator - SeDeK agrofirm

6. The trunk of an elephant - agrofirm Aelita

3.1. Sociological survey of students and teachers of the school class.

A survey was conducted among students and teachers with the aim of finding out - do they know what leek is and whether it is grown on their backyard plots? It was attended by 39 people, each was given a task of three questions:

Do you know a vegetable crop like leeks?

What varieties of leeks can you name?

What is the farming technique of leeks?

The first question was answered positively by 12 people, but only three teachers were able to name the varieties of onion-porea, the students do not know the varietal variety. Only 7 people grow this culture on their personal plots. You can see the result on the slide.

Conclusions: I decided to share my knowledge with the guys and introduced them to my work.

Conditions for growing leeks are recommended.

Leeks are grown in well-lit beds.

It grows well on highly fertile loamy and floodplain soil with a loose structure and a neutral reaction of the medium (closer to alkaline, pH 6.5-7).

Too acidic soils need preliminary liming .

Leeks are a moisture-loving plant that especially needs watering in the second half of the growing season.

Water the leeks once every 5 days at the rate of 10 liters of water per 1 m² of the garden.

Prepare leek seeds well before sowing. To do this, they are soaked in water at a temperature of 50 ° C for 25 minutes, then washed and kept for 5-7 days in a damp cloth.

Leeks are grown only in very fertile soils.

Up to 15 kg are applied per 1 m² of beds in the spring organic fertilizers , 120 g of ammophoska or 60 g of ammonium nitrate, 40 g of potassium salt and 50 g of superphosphate.

The soil in the garden bed is dug deeply in the fall and spring, before planting it is watered abundantly.

Leeks need 3-4 dressings per season, for which 20 g of ammonium nitrate and 15 g of potassium salt are dissolved in 10 liters of water (for 4 m² of the garden). The first feeding is carried out 20 days after planting the leeks.

Before hilling onions, ash is poured onto the stems (1 glass per 1 m² of the garden).

Leeks are fed and watered until early September.

Seeds are sown in pots 65-75 days before planting seedlings in a permanent place.

In open ground, hardened leek seedlings are planted in early - mid-May. Before planting seedlings, for better survival, the roots and leaves are shortened by 1/3.

Planting scheme for leeks - 25x15 cm.

Planting depth of leek seedlings - 12 cm.

Leek care consists in regular watering, frequent loosening of row spacings, fertilizing with mineral fertilizers (3-4 times per season).

From the middle of summer, planting leeks spud

Leeks are cold-resistant, so they can be left in the beds until the end of November.

The soil was prepared, sod land was taken for planting, light and loose.

The seeds were not pre-soaked.

The selected variety "Autumn giant" of the agricultural firm SeDeK, which has been repeatedly tested for the quality of germination.

“Late ripening (156-200 days) variety. The plant is powerful, 1-1.2 m high. The leaves are wide, flat, up to 80 cm long, a thickened false bleached stem up to 40 cm in length and up to 8 cm in diameter. Semi-sharp taste. To obtain a long bleached stalk, it is recommended to carry out high hilling 3-4 times during the growing season. Light and moisture-loving. Needs regular watering and feeding with organic and mineral fertilizers. Variety value: high productivity, uniformity of plants, good keeping quality. Possesses healing properties. Contains vitamins C, B1, B2, PP, carotene. Improves the activity of the liver and gallbladder, increases appetite. The thickened lower white part of the stem and young leaves are used for food, adding them to salads, soups, frozen vegetable sets. "

Sowing was carried out on February 20, 2014. The container with seeds was covered with foil and placed in a warm place.

Shoots appeared on March 19, 2014.

Before planting in a permanent place, the seedlings were regularly watered, for feeding they used "Potassium Humate", and so that the onion would not stretch out, twice watered with the "Athlete" preparation.

On May 20, when the threat of frost has passed and the hot days have not yet come, the seedlings of leeks are planted in a permanent place.

The landing site was carefully dug up, a two-line bed was formed. The furrows for planting are shed with warm water with a solution of potassium humate.

The seedlings were planted at a distance of 15-20 cm and to a depth of 10-12 cm, before planting, the leaves and roots were cut by 1/3.

Applied with the thinnest covering material

Regular irrigation by irrigation ditches, preventing the soil from drying out

Top dressing with Mullein and Potassium Humate, wood ash.

Regular weeding and loosening of the soil in the inter-row furrows

Hilling of leeks began from the end of June, 4 hilling was carried out during the season

Onion harvesting started from late August to mid-October

Part of the leeks was left for an experiment on cultivation as a two-year culture, while they were covered with dense covering material.

At the beginning of April, the snow at the summer cottage has not yet melted

The onions came out of wintering successfully, in many respects this was ensured by the snowy winter, abundant watering before leaving for the winter, and regular feeding.

1. Leek - as a vegetable crop, it is not very common on farmsteads in our area. It is necessary to popularize this culture among the population.

2. There is a wide range of leek varieties on the market

3. The opportunity to purchase seeds is not only in seed shops, but also through the online stores of agricultural firms.

4. Growing leeks is not the most difficult task, it starts with planting seedlings in the month of February.

Growing seedlings

For me this is the simplest thing. Onion shoots are very compact - thin strings, they barely grow. You can fit many pieces into one pot, the main thing is to maintain the distance between them by 1-2 cm.

I immediately sow in a deep pot and less often so as not to dive. If they sprout up thickly, you will have to plant them. This year I had the opposite situation. Exhibishen went up badly, on the contrary, it was necessary to collect from two pots into one, so that two half-empty ones would not take the place.

Leaving is watering. If the land is initially fertile (its own, mixed with humus and ash), then additional fertilizing is not needed. Purchased soil requires fertilizing with seedling mixtures according to the instructions.

Many people like to prune onion seedlings. I don’t do it. But it is necessary, if the feathers are strongly stretched and lie down, otherwise they will rot.

In general, whoever has already grown any onion through seedlings will be able to grow leek seedlings. All the same.

Do not trim the feather on the day of planting. The strong onion smell will attract the pest - the onion fly. If necessary, trim the day before to dry the wounds.

Agronomist's advice: grow leeks juicy and thick. Planting, care and storage of leeks (photo)

Leeks are very useful and versatile; they are eaten fresh and prepared. Onions are grown everywhere, this is a rather unpretentious culture that is rich in vitamin C. In cooking, not only greens are used, but also "legs" - falsely bleached stems. The growing process is not laborious, even a novice gardener can do it.

Leek: planting seeds for seedlings

The growing season of this culture is quite long, so onions should be planted in seedlings. There are some principles to consider when sowing seeds:

• Planting material should be soaked in warm water for about 25 minutes. Next, the seeds are left wrapped in a damp cloth for several days. This should be done regardless of the cultivation method; the procedure accelerates the emergence of seedlings.

• Sowing seeds for seedlings should be carried out no earlier than the beginning of March.

• Prepare soil for seedlings in advance. Sod land with humus or peat is used as a soil mixture.

• The distance between the lines in the container should be no more than 5 cm, and the seeding depth should be about 1 cm.

• Boxes with seeds must be covered with foil to maintain the required level of humidity and heat.

• When seedlings appear, the daytime temperature should be about 18 degrees, the nighttime temperature - 10 degrees.

• Seedlings need additional fertilizing, which is carried out twice using mineral fertilizers.

• Regular watering of seedlings is the key to growing strong and healthy seedlings.

Before planting leek seedlings in the garden, it must be hardened. To do this, a week before the expected planting, the temperature in the room is reduced, containers with seedlings are taken out into the open air.

Leek care

It is recommended to feed with special fertilizer for onions twice a season. Watering is mandatory and regular.

If planted on flat ground, then as the legs grow up, they huddle it to the leaves ... During the season, the earth is poured 2-3 times.

If planted in a trench, then its walls (rollers) will crumble themselves over time from rain and irrigation. After that, until the fall, you need to huddle twice more.

I liked the way from comments from Lyudmila Zaitseva ... She plants the seedlings on a flat surface. When the onion gets stronger and grows, put for each bush a glass from a plastic bottle without a bottom - high ring. As it grows, it pours loose soil (2 parts of sand and 1 part of earth) into these glasses.

And no hassle with furrows, ridges and hilling. Thank you very much Lyudmila! I think that I am not the only one who will be grateful for this idea.
