Florida represents several climatic regions. The proper selection of species and cultivars is probably the most important decision that determines the success or failure of a farm enterprise. All of these releases have a low chilling requirement, which is critical to all growing regions of Florida.
Many of these UF specialty crop cultivars ripen in early spring during a market window with little or no worldwide competition. Site selection is extremely important for successful production of most fruit and nut crops in Florida. Potential orchard sites should have soil that is well drained and slightly sloped for cold air drainage.
A number of cultivars have been developed for North, Central, and South Florida, and a continued emphasis for the breeding program is to increase the diversity of germplasm for the entire state.
However, small and large producers seldom are aware of, nor can they find, these Florida-adapted cultivars of fruit and nut crops from local nurseries. It is important to buy patented varieties from licensed nurseries.
Florida is unique, however, in that it is one of the few states that showed an increase in the total number of farms in the census. Small farmers in Florida have great opportunities because of the large urban centers, the mild climate, and abundant natural resources available. Most small farmers choose to directly market their products to the consumer to maximize profits. A diversity of fresh products to offer, such as fruits, nuts, and vegetables, generally is preferred at most direct-market venues.
Florida is poised to increase the number, sustainability, and profitability of small farms with increased access to new and improved cultivars, further exploitation of market windows, the development of new information and technologies on culture, and management and pest control, which includes insect monitoring, the use of trap cropping, safer targeted pesticides, and biological control.
Florida's subtropical climate is suitable for the culture of numerous fruit and nut trees. Certain species and cultivars can be grown successfully in Florida with a minimum of inputs well adapted to Florida or only with the investment of substantial inputs marginally adapted , while others cannot be grown at all non-adapted. Proper crop selection results in minimal inputs, such as pesticides, irrigation, fertilizer, and labor.
Sustainable crops are those with minimal inputs and consistent outputs, including yield, fruit quality, and minimal environmental impact. However, there is not always a good correlation between profitability and sustainability.
Other crops may be less sustainable southern highbush blueberry but still be attractive because of high potential profitability. Cultivar selection is the orchard's foundation. Appropriate cultivar selection minimizes inputs and maximizes profits. This publication was developed to assist farmers in locating recommended cultivars of fruit and nut crops from Florida nurseries. Many nurseries listed in Table 1 only offer a few cultivars, while others offer several cultivars of many fruit or nut crops.
Table 2 lists fruit and nut cultivars that University of Florida Extension specialists currently recommend or suggest on a trial basis. Maintaining an up-to-date list of cultivar inventory at each nursery is very challenging, so contact the nurseries directly to determine current inventory, or view their websites if available.

Fruit and nut trees are a fun and rewarding addition to backyard landscapes throughout New Mexico. They have beautiful flowers, leaves, and fruit; provide much needed cooling shade; serve as habitat and food for birds and other wildlife; and, most importantly, produce healthful and delicious food. Late spring frosts occur frequently in all areas of the state, injuring the flowers and young fruits of early flowering species. In the north and at high altitudes, minimum winter temperatures limit the species that can be successfully planted. Low relative humidity and drying winds may desiccate plants.

Please do not make further orders or enquiries via email account of fruitandnut. Fruit and Nut is an independent horticultural research establishment based in the west of Ireland. The research is primarily focused on global warming and food security issues, particularly with regard to the potential of tree crops in cool temperate climates and especially nuts as within the range of trees that could produce an edible crop, nut trees - by virtue of their higher calorific, protein and lipid content - have the greatest food security potential. As far as we are aware, we are the only research establishment in Europe - possibly the whole of the Northern Hemisphere - that is looking specifically at the contribution of tree crops to local food security. Of particular interest is the establishment of nut orchards in Ireland. In addition to the nut research, the nursery also has trialled many different varieties of fruit and fruit rootstocks, and is currently trialling a selection of berries suited to cultivation in acid peat. The nursery is also a supplier of fruit and nut trees. The nursery carries the largest range of nut trees in Ireland and is Ireland's leading supplier of nut trees.
One of the joys of gardening is planting and eating your own home-grown fruit and nuts. The choices are huge: apple trees, pear trees, asian pears, plums.

The Heritage Fruit Tree Nursery is a small but diverse enterprise situated on a few acres of land in the lovely county of Leitrim. The land in question is very well drained, with deep, black peaty soil, which is rich in natural organic matter. This is a huge advantage as it means the soil is always moist but never wet, allowing roots to enjoy optimum growing conditions all year round. As a result, our trees are strong and healthy with well-developed root systems.

Our selection of fruit trees changes every year, so we post lists annually to help with planning. The lists are based on orders that are confirmed by our growers, so they reflect our best estimate of what to expect. However, we don't always receive what is confirmed - there are often changes in root stocks and crop failures can occur. Only after orders arrive are we certain of our stock. Fruit trees, berries and small fruits begin to arrive in February, and trickle in weekly through winter. Our fruit trees arrive mainly in February-March, and often sell quickly.
There has been a lot of publicity in recent years on the health benefits of nuts. They are an important source of omega-3 fatty acids which protect from heart disease and they also contain a variety of other beneficial nutrients. As well, they are very tasty and make great healthy snacks. Their popularity, however, is reflected in their cost and unless you buy poor-quality, imported nuts, the benefits certainly come at a price.
