Sunburn plant indoors

Sunburn plant indoors

In the summer, orchids are afforded more light than at any other time of the year. The increased level of sunlight coupled with the high daytime temperatures puts orchids at risk for sunburn. It doesn't take much to burn a leaf, especially when plants are brought outside. As with any orchid ailment, it can be difficult to identify the true cause of leaf damage.

Yes, Your Houseplants Can Get Sunburned: Here's How to Prevent It

Make sure your indoor plants don't get too much of a good thing. One of the best ways to change up their location without harming them is to go about it gradually so they have time to get them used to a spot with more sun. Leaves can also lose their color if your plant is getting too much water or not enough light, but usually, if the reason is sunburn, only the leaves on the top of the plant, where the sun hits, will change color.

But other plants, especially ones that are used to low-light conditions, are more likely to get burned if you move them into a new spot with lots of sun. Instead of taking a plant from your bathroom or a dark corner of your house and moving it straight into bright sunlight, ease it in. Then, after a few days, try setting it in morning sunlight for just an hour or two. Over a few weeks, gradually increase the amount of sun your plant is getting.

Unhealthy houseplant with yellow leaves. Severe sunburns, such as on this dieffenbachia, can turn the edges of the leaves brown and crispy. Depending on the type of plant and how long it was in sun, the exposed leaves can lose their color and turn white, or turn more yellow. Credit: Dean Schoeppner. Comments Add Comment. Kalanchoes are succulent plants often grown for their tiny, colourful flowers. They are popular house plants grown for their brightly coloured flowers in shades of red, magenta, yellow, orange and white. Direct sunlight can wreak havoc on your plants, but mulch — especially reflective kinds such as dry grass clippings — can be a plant-saver. It also reduces maintenance chores, saves water by retaining water and reducing evaporation, and encourages vigorous plant growth. This means less watering for you and happier, healthier roots. And the best part is that savvy gardeners can find everything they need for a good mulch without ever spending a dime. Other mulching options include straw, alfalfa, newspaper, black plastic sheeting, and even seaweed. Here is a helpful list of mulch variations that can be used for all temperatures and conditions. Drinking water first thing in the morning has been shown to provide a range of health benefits for us. And the same goes for our plants. Heat waves can quickly pull the moisture right out of soil and dehydrate shallow roots. Watering early in the morning ensures that roots are amply hydrated before the oppressive heat of the day begins.

Tips to protect your plants from sunburn

Browning leaves are typically caused by under watering, sunburn, or overwatering. If the leaf tips are turning brown and crunchy, the soil likely became too dry for too long in between waterings. This can also cause the plant to drop leaves. This doesn't necessarily mean that you are consistently under watering, as it could have only happened one time to cause the browning. The brown leaf tips will not turn back to green but you can trim the brown edges to get the plant back to looking healthy. Find out more here.
